Meet the People Behind the Work

ABRAHAM DENG ATER

Abraham Deng Ater was born in Duk area, South Sudan, between 1976 and 1979. He immigrated to the United States in 2001 after spending fourteen years of immeasurable suffering in refugee camps in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Kenya. He attended the University of Arizona and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Master of Public Health in 2006 and 2010 respectively. He currently lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

SOLOMON M.  AWAN

Executive Director

Solomon M.  Awan is Executive Director and Co-founder of United Visions for Change. His professional work includes accounts payable at Western Nut Company, Business Analyst at UBS Bank USA, and currently a Loan Specialist at Zions Bank. 


Awan is involved in many Utah state and South Sudanese base organizations. He is member to the Council of Emerging Bank Leaders, Utah Council on financial and Economic Education, Board member, Greater Bor Community - USA, and many more. His community involvement has earned him Distinguish Alumni Award from Westminster College, the youngest ever to receive such an award in the school history.

 Awan received his bachelor’s degree in business and finance, and also received Masters of Business Administration and graduate certificate in finance from Westminster College.

Awan is happily married to his lovely wife, Elizabeth Kuany, from whom they have been blessed with three children, one boy and two girls. They both live in Salt Lake City, Utah.

PETER MACHOK

Board Member and Community Relations Director

Peter Machok was born in 1980 in Duk South Sudan. He fled his hometown 1987 and lived in Refugee camp for fourteen years in Ethiopia until he was forced back to Sudan.  He then fled to Kenya in 1992. Peter spent his childhood living in refugee camps. He migrated to the United States in 2001 and went to school in Edinburgh, Indiana to finish his high school diploma in 2003 while taking vocational training classes at evening for sixteen months. He got his high school diploma and received vocational certificate in computer operation and computer support system. Peter now lives in Texas and works in management.
